About me, my market, and what I love most about my work.
I basically got into this because it seemed like so much film and arts criticism treated the subject from a position of intellectual remove, which I found false and dishonest. Now I cover film and entertainment as a freelancer and from my subscription newsletter, where I can write how I want for the people who get it, without being beholden to access or advertisers.
What it means to me to be part of CCA.
As seemingly every major outlet de-emphasizes or outright cancels their arts criticism sections, it’s more important than ever to have organizations affirm the value of real criticism. Being part of CCA is important to me because it supports the idea that independent criticism is something that has cultural value and will continue to exist regardless of the prevailing commercial trends in media.
My favorite film/TV series that I am currently watching and why.
I just finished the seasons of Gilded Age, Your Friends and Neighbors, and Hunting Wives, which are all juicy, unapologetic soap operas in different ways. They all have unresolved conflicts between their antihero protagonists and the need for a series that keeps going, but they all had me hooked and that’s the ultimate yardstick for quality.
