In 1991, Arnold Schwarzenegger uttered the now-famous phrase “I’ll be back” in Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Unbeknownst to anyone watching the film in the Alex Theatre in Glendale, California, it would take 35 years for that promise to come true on that particular screen.

A story by The Hollywood Reporter shares that the century-old Alex has lain dormant as a venue for showing first-run films since Sarah and John Connor were on the screen decades ago. But, like the Cyclops rising from its slumber, the Alex installed its 70mm presentation system just ahead of The Odyssey’s July 17 release, with a price tag of half a million dollars. And now, in less than a month, the Alex has earned the distinction of being the number one theater in the country for the film amid its $415 million-and-counting haul.

THR says the overhaul was overseen by projectionist Taylor Umphenour, who is “an Imax consultant who has worked with Nolan on his dailies.” Umphenour explained “What you have at a cinema like the Alex is a true understanding of the in-person experience of shared narrative,” he says. “That’s why people are coming – and losing their minds.”

The theater plans to keep the momentum going with at least two more weeks of The Odyssey, as well as this year’s buzzy, large-scale releases of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three in December and Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew in February 2027.
