Dr. Emanuel Levy belongs to a small group of scholars who have juggled dual careers as a film professor (M.A. and Ph.D., Columbia University) and a film critic (formerly for Variety, Screen International, and the Financial Times). A former three-year president of the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, he has served on the juries of 70 international Film Festivals, including Cannes, Venice, Locarno, Roma, San Francisco, Toronto, Hawaii, and Sundance. In 2003, he established the highly acclaimed website Emanuel Levy Cinema 24/7, which now contains over 33,000 reviews and essays. Among his nine film books are All About Oscar: The History and Politics of the Academy Awards, Cinema of Outsiders: The Rise of American Independent Film, Gay Directors, Gay Films: Almodovar, Terence Davis, Todd Hayne, Gus Van Sant, John Waters, George Cukor: Master of Elegance, and the first biography of Vincente Minnelli, Hollywood’s Dark Dreamer. Emanuel has been a CCA member since 2002.
