Lee Chang-dong’s Possible Love and May el-Toukhy’s Woman Unknown were in heated competition to win the Golden Lion this year. The latter was victorious for el-Toukhy, and Best Actress also went to star Mathilde Arcel. 

Woman Unknown was the only film in competition directed solely by a woman, a fact which jury president Maggie Gyllenhaal expressed displeasure with. While discussing the matter at length, she noted that the film “was like a laser beam” and deserved its win. 

Possible Love did take home the Grand Jury Prize, and as the awards campaign gains momentum, Netflix will begin streaming Chang-dong’s six previous films starting November 6, according to THR.

Ilya Khrzhanovsky took home the Best Director award for Soviet epic DAU. And although Robert Pattinson is creating a stir as Chris Hansen in Primetime, John Malkovich took home Best Actor for Wild Horse Nine. 

Special Jury Prize went to NAZA, which was made by the filmmakers behind No Other Land. It drew a record-breaking 25-minute ovation when it screened, and is currently unsold in the U.S.
