So many brilliant selections this year. As a journalist, I love documentaries because I learn so much. I never feel like I’m wasting my time when I watch a documentary – which was exactly my feeling watching, for example, The Eternals. Once a year, I make the decision to walk out of a screening when it is simply too dumb/awful – so The Eternals marked my “walk-out” for 2021. And I love Chloe Zhao and remember being gob-smacked by The Rider at TIFF and then interviewing her afterwards and seeing first-hand how cool she was and loving her unique voice. I love the Canadians because they appreciate the value of documentaries and even have dedicated documentary cinemas. The more we know, the smarter we are. I grew up in the UK watching Jacques Cousteau but had no idea that he was a forerunner in ringing the bell about Climate Change. What a man! If only we’d paid more attention to him 50 years earlier. This is my first voting year as a CCA member (International branch) although I’ve been a BAFTA voter for 20 years. Not sure if any of my stream of consciousness is helpful or even necessary. But just wanted to say how much I loved ALL the documentary entries and feel a wiser human being for having seen them all.

As much as I love Edgar Wright…didn’t the Sparks Bros documentary feel so repetitive? I really wanted to like that more than I did.

A friend sat through it at a filmiest and after said, “That’s a lot of Sparks.”

Such a wonderful lineup of choices. As a longtime fan of docs(and former documentarian) – I look forward to this each year. My only regret is that Tom Petty’s doc wasn’t available during deliberations – If you haven’t had the chance, and you love music docs, I encourage you to seek out – Tom Petty, Somewhere You Feel Free.

The end result of screening and immersing myself in the documentaries is that the information and passions change me in a way that’s surprising and lasting. Each leaves its story with me.
I love the experience. Look forward to it each year.

Another great year for docs! It was really hard to choose this time around, which is a good thing.

Interesting collection of documentaries, though it is quite apparent the line between documentary and propaganda is still blurred.
