A newspaper reporter since 1981, John Beifuss has been the movie reviewer at The Commercial Appeal, the daily newspaper in Memphis, since 1996. He was born in Chicago, grew up in Memphis, and earned his journalism degree at Northwestern University. His first published story — titled “Twin Titans of Terror,” a look at the co-starring films of Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi — was published in Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine when he was in high school. He has written for such publications as the New York Times, TV Guide and American Film. He reviews movies weekly on AM-730 Fox Sports in Memphis and on “Appeal TV,” the video news portion of The Commercial Appeal’s website; and he discusses movies on WREG-TV’s “Life at 9” and on WKNO-TV. He is a member of the Southeastern Film Critics Association and the Memphis Newspaper Guild.
