As mandated by the BFCA by-laws, it is time for the bi-annual Board of Directors election. While day-to-day responsibilities are delegated to the President and Executive Vice President, the BFCA Board broadly oversees those operations. The BFCA current Directors are John De Simio, Jim Ferguson, Mark Ramsey and Sara Voorhees.

As President, I serve on the Board as well. It has been my pleasure to work closely with John, Jim, Mark and Sara. I believe that their commitment to the BFCA, their wisdom, their experience, and their record of success in building the BFCA continue to make them the perfect team to help run our group. I am thrilled to report that they all have stated their wish to continue on the Board and I heartily endorse each of them for re-election.

In addition to general oversight, each of the Board members has developed special expertise during their years of service to the BFCA. John, who is also the BFCA’s Executive Vice President, is our point person dealing with studios, networks and publicists. Jim is our eyes and ears at the junkets and sits on the Film Festival Committee. Mark is our Marketing Director and website specialist. Sara is our Membership Director and also oversees our Scholarship and Grants programs. Collectively, their contributions to the BFCA cannot be overstated.

If any other members wish to run for a seat on the Board, now is the time to throw that hat into the ring. Members can place their name in nomination or otherwise comment on the election right here. Or any member can feel free to contact me directly with any questions (joeyberlin7@gmail.com).

The nominating process will close on May 24, 2011. A new article will be posted after that date, if necessary, in preparation for an election in early June. If no one chooses to oppose the current Board members running for re-election, there will be no voting and the current Board will continue to serve.

Board members serve two-year terms, beginning on July 1. The current financial reimbursement for each Board member is $10,000 per year.

Producing a live television event and an awards gala with a thousand attendees is a very complicated task. Working with an extremely limited budget this year, I am very proud of the job we did and the success of the 18th annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards in its press coverage and its ratings.

That said, I also wish to apologize to the membership for the failures on the night of the show. I don’t believe they outweigh the successes – including our wise awards voting, the terrific celebrity turnout and the entertainment value of the show overall – but I don’t believe they should be overlooked either.

The weather was out of our control. While last year it was in the 70s on show day, this year it was in the 30s. In fact, it was the coldest day of the year inSanta Monica. We brought in as many heaters as our budget would allow, but even with our TV lights warming the room as well it was obviously too damn cold in the Barker Hangar. On the bright side, I guess it kept the dinner salads chilled.

The thing I am most sorry about is the way we insulted the nominees and winners in the award categories we presented during the commercial breaks. Last year we presented a couple of awards in commercial breaks and the audience stayed seated for them. But this year for some reason people thought it was mingle time and the show producers failed to quiet them and get them reseated. The result was an ugly spectacle – instead of honoring the producers of “Wreck-It Ralph” and “Lincoln” screenwriter Tony Kushner we insulted them. I have formally apologized through the studio, but nonetheless it was inexcusable.

We were lucky to have our own BFCA member Sam Rubin host the show – and do it so well and on such late notice. Many members have long called for more BFCA presence on the telecast and it was nice to have that this year. The decision to have Sam host was made so late in the process that we never formally announced him as host, which was unfair to Sam and the whole BFCA. Sam was truly remarkable, doing his day job (starting at dawn when the Oscar nominations were announced), then hosting our televised two-hour Red Carpet Preshow, and then hosting the main show.

As we continue to move onward and upward, we’ll keep learning from our mistakes and building on our successes. The 18th annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards was a huge success for the CW and for the BFCA. We should all be very proud of it. I know I am, despite its flaws.

The reviews are in. We did it again.

Yes, the stars shined and our 18th annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards looked great. Coverage has been sensational, especially surrounding the “moments” we got from Ben Affleck, Quvenzhane Wallis and Judd Apatow.

And the ratings were terrific. Despite the fact that there was no network promotion, almost two million viewers were watching us honor the finest in cinematic achievement, our biggest audience since 2006 on The WB.

More to come next week, but for now just a big thank you to all the BFCA members involved in the show – led by our indefatigable host Sam Rubin – and all those who did so much to promote the telecast.

Have you ever slammed one of our illustrious nominees in one of your reviews? Not in the film they are nominated for this year, of course, but in something they did in the past.

We are trying to get the critics – us! – more visible in the show this year, throughout the show. So we’re looking for short and nasty and funny blurbs from past reviews that YOU can then share with the star at the show. We would have you shoot your quote Thursday morning at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, most likely between 10 and 11 a.m., and then we would feature it in a bit during the show Thursday night.

If you want to be part of this, send me your quote ASAP via email (joeyberlin7@gmail.com) and we’ll get back to you if we’re going to do it.

And look for more emails from BFCA tonight or tomorrow morning. Final round voting begins at midnight and info about that and picking up your tickets and parking passes (assuming you’ve already rsvp’d for the show) is headed your way. Voting will close at midnight PT on Tuesday.

The 18th annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards is shaping up as our best show yet. The fact that it is taking place just hours after the Academy Award nominations are announced is sure to add to the excitement, especially for those many stars who are going to be celebrating their Oscar noms in the morning with us that same afternoon and evening.

Virtually all of the major nominees have confirmed that they’ll be joining us on January 10th. Subject to last minute changes, we’re expecting ALL of our Best Actor AND Best Actress nominees, ALL of our Directors, and just about everyone else, too. (Call the BFCA office if there’s anyone you’re particularly interested in – 310-860-2665.)

In a nod to our new broadcast partner, The CW Television Network, we’ve added a bunch of popular categories focusing on the movies that most of their viewers are most interested in – including Best Actor and Actress in Comedy and in Action Movies, plus Best Sci-Fi/Horror movie, and our first fan-voted award, Favorite Film Franchise. Voting for the latter was powered by Virb, a Media Temple company, which is also hosting our first ever night before “Pre-Party” at 41 Ocean Club.

The hysterical Rebel Wilson will be presenting Judd Apatow with our first Critics’ Choice Louis XIII Genius Award, which is bound to be one of the evening’s highlights. In fact, looking at the show rundown there seem to be nothing BUT highlights for the whole two hours.

We’ve moved our CCMA to a huge new venue – the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica – so we can finally get EVERYONE in the room and seated on the floor. It will be about a thousand of Hollywood’s heaviest hitters, stars, filmmakers, studio execs and about 140 BFCA members, all in one room. The Red Carpet show (live on KTLA-LA and on ReelzChannel immediately preceding the main show), the CCMA on The CW, and the After Party will ALL be at the Barker Hangar.

BFCA members will be more involved in the show than ever before, in ways both funny and fabulous. We don’t want to give away everything, but the 18th annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards will be truly spectacular.
